Nursing Informatics in Role in Health Care

NURS FPX 4040 Assessment 1 Nursing Informatics in Health Care NR

Nurse informaticist is a term that refers to nurses who are experts in using technologies and apply them in their disciplines to improve the quality of care and coordination outcomes. Nursing informatics use in healthcare organizations often fosters with nurses’ hands-on experience and expertise by collaborating with IT specialists. The combination of communication and technology allows professionals in a healthcare organization to use software like EHR (electronic health records) and other communication tools to improve the knowledge of professionals to enhance patient care outcomes and education (Foster, 2020). Many researchers agree to the fact the healthcare informatics for nurses are vital to help them gain practical knowledge of technologies that can benefit patients. A nurse informatics informs care coordinators about adapting new workflow methods and access and analyzes data with more convenience and integrity. This provides healthcare professionals and nurses a better  opportunity of providing optimum care solutions using technologies. Hence, in this report, the importance of nursing informatics is discussed for the promotion of patients’ health with improvement of connectivity, care, and networking in a healthcare organization.

Nursing informatics use involves use of sophisticated software and tools such as development tools, and web-based and desktop software to help several individuals like chief nursing officers, information specialists, administrators, and policy designers. In the past 20 years, the importance of using technology in every aspect of life and healthcare has boosted rapidly. Which is why nursing informatics have become an integral part of professional activities of nurses across the United States. Using this informatics can help professionals to advance the processes of patient care by integrating IT and computer based tools together to conduct better communication and information management.

Recent advancements in technology and nursing informatics help nurses to interpret data more appropriately and seamlessly. This helps to improve their accuracy and drug administration by avoiding human errors in their fields. Moreover, professional nurses in our organization had attended a Nurses Association meeting in New York where I had a chance to talk about my responsibilities using the effectiveness of nursing informatics for improving patient care outcomes. I proposed the employment function in collaboration with our Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and HR Manager to create a worthy proposal for assisting officials to use nursing informatics and improve their return on investment. I believe that the major aim of nursing informatics is using technology for the improvement of nursing practices. This means that training and education of nurses related to software and IT tools is also vital for helping them understand the use of IT tools. Using these tools can help nurses to improve their skills related to measuring patient care statistics and help them to evaluate the quality of health. Moreover, the access to more communication can improve the accuracy of information delivery and improve nurse’s access to patients’ information. Therefore, as a qualified and expert nurse in informatics for twelve years, I am performing my role of boosting the use of information technology in connection to nurses ‘role in our organization and to facilitate the best practices.

How Nurses Collaborate with Interdisciplinary teams to Improve Patient Care Quality

Numerous studies have explained the role and importance of nurse’s collaboration via information technology to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and improve the care quality of healthcare patients in healthcare organizations. For example, nurses use telehealth tools such as remote video conferencing tools such as Skype to improve the life quality of patients. To enhance collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, nurses have a great option to use smart watches, smart phones, tablets, and other computers and laptops installed with a plethora of software to remotely help patients reveal their conditions and feelings (Sano, 2020). Moreover, the role of IT communication enhances collaboration to improve nursing practices and procedures because technology helps nurses to efficiently keep their documentation and save its security to avoid any data loss. This helps to keep and store the vital and sensitive information of patients always stored in a safe and protected computer or software that allows nurses to collaborate and convey patients’ data to doctors and other authorities from time to time. Hence, this shows that up-to-date patient histories by using electronic health records can be used significantly these days to allow nurses work more efficiently. This means that information and collaboration becomes easy to access and helps the concerned staff to feel easy and accessible.

Nurses can also collaborate effectively with professionals using smart and sophisticated mobile devices which help them to maintain medical records well. Nurses can save digital information on multiple devices that can be accessed anywhere around the world anytime. The patients can use digital data anywhere in the world and access it in the hospital to share it with the staff accordingly.

The Need for Nursing Informatics (Evidence-Based)

The pandemic has brought many complications for our organization.  In the context of COVID-19 and nursing informatics role, I would say the implementation of technology has facilitated significantly in gathering and administering patient data via EHR tools. This claim is also backed by several researchers claiming the effectiveness of technology and nursing informatics in the outbreak of the pandemic such as Shin (2018)  by stating that more new IT problems has arisen due to the pandemic in the United States. The authors state that nurses are finding it more difficult in the middle of this crisis to manage personnel data; patient information and data collection activities have become harder. Due to several system upgrades and the deployment and integration of new technology, the role of nursing leaders is indispensable to minimize supply chain issues and establish standards to reduce the compulsive paper or manual work. Moreover, another study by Kim (2019) also states that nursing informatics used in hospitals is improving due to the pandemic. Nurse now can successfully manage more data and able to make sophisticated and comprehensive data-driven decision to make their processes better. Team members are also able to receive and access the information holistically; this practice is also improving the efficiency of nurses, reducing hospital costs, and enhancing the safer of patients suffering from chronic disease. Therefore, the need for nursing informatics is justified and well-deserved in the modern environments where monitoring, implementation, and management of information technology tools are done well by nurses possessing the knowledge of IT.

Protected health information (security, privacy, and confidentiality)

Many researchers have confirmed the use of nursing informatics for the benefit of healthcare organizations to enhance patient’s privacy, security, and confidentiality. When concerned authorities and nurses talk about improving security and privacy of patients, they are foremost to discuss the efficiency and importance of using HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) guidelines and rules in healthcare settings to ensure that patients’ private information and data is always in good hands. For instance, the study published by  Foster (2018) argues that confidentiality of information of patients is vital for healthcare professionals who have a responsibility of securing and saving the clinical records of their customers and making sure that they keep all the information in good hands without leaking it to unauthorized personnel (Foster, 2018). The HIPPA rules set boundaries and provide guidelines for nurses to increase the secrecy and privacy of patient’s information to establish positive relationships with them. Moreover, nurses can also enhance and make their patient care decisions more infirmly and effectively using nursing informatics according to HIPPA rules. This means that all the sensitive details regarding patient’s data can be stored with utmost privacy and HIPPA Privacy Law allows professionals to maintain the ethics regarding data safety and security. This is beneficial for patients in hospitals because they can also retrieve their digital data through smart phones if needed and can help their families make the right decisions.

Furthermore, the study published by Cho (2022) also states that patient protection is the most important challenge for many nurses having low experience in healthcare organizations. In the 20th century, the concept of patient security and confidentiality was not fully established with nurses storing information in manful registers in shelves in hospitals. However, with the advent of Microsoft Windows and cheap computer hardware, IT has made it possible to store digital health records according to HIPPA’s Security guidelines to establish better standards for nurses to protect their patients.

Moreover, another study by Alving  (2018) also discusses the challenges and opportunities regarding utilization of information technology tools to help nurses collaborate easily with concerned teams and patients in several departments and wards. The study emphasize on learning the skill of IT for nurses that can help them implementing these technologies well within an interdisciplinary scenario to boost patient care outcomes. This means that nurses expertise in the IT systems and data management should increase through education and training in the American organizations. This way, they can handle challenges related to troubleshooting and database schema administration without the help of IT professionals and save hospital costs. Therefore, we can conclude through these researches that nurses can advance their careers by becoming exerts in healthcare informatics tools and gain substantial improvement in their overall career. This will enhance their ability to deal with important medical information and reduce the risk of losing information stored in databases. Similar, the study by   Abdekhoda (2021) concludes that many organizations should hire specialized staff and nurses who have good knowledge of nursing informaticists because it is vital to have these skills in today’s modern environments. Using and installing software such as Skype, Zoom, and Microsoft Office can help them to not only improve data security and confidentiality but also address any security issues.
