USAID has a Global Health Vision which is; a world where people lead healthy, productive lives and where mothers and children thrive. The organization’s global health mission statement is supporting partner countries in prevention and management of major health challenges facing the poor, undeserved and vulnerable people so at to have improved health outcomes. This, it aims to do by;

USAID’s global health programs focus on different aspects such as; Nutrition, Neglected tropical diseases, Tuberculosis, health systems, HIV and AIDs, Malaria, Maternal and child health and cross cutting areas among others. The cross cutting area has those programs that operate mainly with a multiple disease focus. Some of the sub sectors here include; the global health initiative, environmental health, children in adversity, promotion of gender equality through health and innovation and impact.

The children in adversity program is based on the United States’ public law PL 109-95 that was created to ensure that there is proper coordination of international assistance for vulnerable children. It’s aimed at children without protective families, living on streets, in abusive households, trafficked, in armed groups and fragile families and facing various risks among others. USAID in association with other stakeholders in 2012 launched the U.S. Government Action Plan on Children in Adversity. This action plan has three main areas of focus; Building strong beginnings, putting family care first and protection of children.

The USAID’s family planning program was started in 1965 and aims at helping women avoid unnecessary pregnancies and help couples determine when and how often to have children. It is undertaken in more than 45 countries across the world.

Project’s/Projects’ Impact on Global Health

The children in adversity program was recently started and its full fruits are yet to be seen. However, it is expected that by having proper coordination of assistance aimed at the vulnerable children, the children’s welfare and health will be greatly improved. Recently, 19 leaders from four regions developed the global alliance for children in adversity. Its aim is mobilize private and public resources and knowledge in supporting the children in adversity.

The family planning program has been in existence for a long time and has had the following impacts; reducing abortion, fighting HIV/Aids, mitigating effects of population dynamics, improved women’s health and better health for children.
